Continent Champion Hands-on — Inferior in every way

Square Enix’s latest gacha game is Octopath Traveler: Continental Champion with a Nintendo Switch game motif, but now offers all the free mechanics that most gamers dislike. That’s right; Square thought it wise to take advantage of Ocotpath Traveler’s popularity with mobile and financially abusive gacha games, and offered a familiar fusion of popular HD-2D art styles. But it’s not sophisticated, as if it were minimal. A perfectly sound business strategy for developing and launching free-to-play mobile games. Get an accurate picture of what Square Enix thinks about its fans.

Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent has finally been pre-registered and has just been released globally, so the game is officially available to everyone, so update Hands-on with the beta version of the game, I thought I would report the results of the survey. I haven’t been impressed with Square’s latest cash grab yet, as there have been few changes since the beta. Let’s dig into why it is.

The gameplay video above (recorded at 1080p / 30fps) details the first hour of the Octopath Traveler: Continental Closed Beta Champion. It covers all full releases, poor performance and more. Basically, I play the first chapter, but since this is a gacha game, the first hour exists as a very long tutorial. Square then throws a bunch of text boxes to explain how the game works. It’s annoying and unnecessary, and shows a lack of design skills that need to reveal the mechanism through play, rather than an endless textbox. It’s lazy and I hate it.

Similar to the console’s OG Octopus, in turn-based combat at the Champions of the Continent, enemies utilize a break system that includes certain weapons and magical weaknesses. Destroying your enemies and taking advantage of these weaknesses opens up opportunities for your enemies to be stunned and unleash powerful attacks. The key to success is to balance the number of breaks and the number of moves that can be saved, given that you can save on the number of attacks you have (again, like the original Octopath).

Octopath Traveler: Continental Spritework Champion

As you can see in the video, the HD-2D graphics known in the original Octopath are only imitated in Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent because the characters are just 2D sprites. The background remains 3D and there is pixel art at the top, but the character doesn’t fit well into the 3D world, so it doesn’t look as good as a mainline game. Thankfully, much of the original music is back, and it’s a killer soundtrack, and certainly a high point.

Octopath Traveler: Champion of Continental Graphic Settings

The performance of the game is where things get sour first. The closed beta I tested a few months ago has poor performance, is locked to 30FPS, and the full release is the same no matter which graphics option you choose. For games that offer simple (but certainly fun) graphics, this is another area where Square’s laziness stands out.

Octopath Traveler: Continental Monetization Champion

The bad news has come. Like all gacha games, the Champions of the Continent contains a number of terrible systems known in this genre. Sure, Square dressed up the game in a long story section, but the first grind wall becomes apparent relatively quickly. Sure, you can immerse yourself in the in-game shop. This is the most accessible way to unlock a new character. So, by definition, the game is pay-to-win.

Yes, what you see in the beta gameplay video above is a complete representation of the Octopath Traveler: Continental Champion launched in the West. Since the beta, Square has done little to improve things. It’s incredibly disappointing, but it certainly matches the developer’s track record. Still, there may be some story beats that are worth experiencing. Therefore, it provides a useful guide for anyone trying to avoid the game abuse system, especially after hitting the first grind wall. , Skills cannot avoid these obstacles. After all, it’s not surprising, as this is a problem with many free games, but it’s not surprising that a talented franchise is dragged into the mud so that Square can make quick money. It’s certainly a shame to see it.
