With OBS, you can take a screenshot for free. How to set up the program and what options there are, we will tell in this practical advice.

FROM Open broadcaster softwareor OBS for short, you can take a screenshot of your screen in just a few steps.

To do this, download the software and install it following the installation wizard.

When you open the program, the auto-configuration wizard appears. Here select “Optimize for recording, streaming is secondary” and click “Next”. Confirm the automatically made video settings by clicking “Next” again.

Then a test is performed that determines the optimal settings for your computer. Confirm this with “Accept Settings”.

Now you will see the recording screen in the middle. It should be black because you haven’t added any images or sound sources yet.

To add your own screen as a source, click the plus icon in the Source section and select Screen Capture. Give the source a name and click OK.

The screen source properties will then be displayed. If you have multiple screens, in the Screen section, select the one you want. You can also define if the mouse pointer should be recorded or not.

Now all you have to do is set up the audio source. By default, it is recorded as internal audio, i.e. what you hear on the computer and what you say into the microphone. This can be set in the audio mixer to the right of the sources.

Here you can adjust the volume of desktop sound, i.e. internal sound, and the microphone. If you want to mute one of the two sources, briefly click once on the loudspeaker symbol.

You can specify the storage location and file format of the screen recording using the “Settings” and “Output” buttons.

Click “Start Recording” to start screen recording.

OBS: Advanced Settings

Once you’ve made the most important recording settings, you have other options in OBS.

• For example, you can record only a certain part of the screen. To do this, set up the screen source as described above and then right-click it.
• Here you can specify the part of the screen that should be recorded in the Transform and Edit Transform section.
• It is also possible to add a webcam to the recording program. To do this, from the plus sign, select “Video recording device” and select the recording device. You can then move it around as you please.
• You can also install shortcuts from OBS and start recording quickly, for example. Keyboard shortcuts are not set by default. However, you can set your own by clicking “File” and “Settings”. In the Hot Keys section, you will find all the actions that can be assigned a shortcut.
