Microsoft has published the final version of its Edge browser based on Chromium for the free Linux operating system and announced support for IE Mode until 2029. In addition, the Microsoft Search Shortcuts known from Microsoft 365 should make Internet searches with Edge even more convenient in the future.
Microsoft Edge for Linux is ready
Under the somewhat cumbersome title “Microsoft Edge celebrates customers moving to IE mode, Linux, and new search innovations”, Microsoft is celebrating several milestones that the company has set for itself. On the one hand, the final version of Edge for Linux, which has been tested since October 2020, was officially published today. The browser is available in .DEB and .RPM format for free operating systems and distributions based on Linux.
ComputerBase also offers Microsoft Edge for Linux in the download area. The package for the RPM Package Manager (RPM) is already available, the Debian package will be submitted if it is available.
Support for IE mode extended until 2029
In addition, support for IE Mode, which emulates Internet Explorer 11 in Edge and is particularly interesting for companies, has been extended to 2029, giving enterprise customers a further grace period until the switch to Edge based on Chromium is finally enforced will. As a positive example of the switch, Microsoft cites the Federal Employment Agency (BA), which modernized its browser for 95,000 employees during the pandemic.
We have had so many applications that are still dependent on Internet Explorer. Microsoft Edge is a browser that serves two worlds for us.
Ronny Intrau, Browser Product Manager, BA
Microsoft states that the result of this renovation will mean that every employee at the federal agency, from the IT department to developers and employees, will be better able to serve customers with Microsoft Edge or IE Mode.

Microsoft Search Shortcuts in Edge
Finally, Microsoft announced that the Microsoft Search Shortcuts as part of Microsoft 365 will also be more closely integrated into Microsoft Edge in the future. Above all, they will improve search queries in a professional context, according to the group.
The job search shortcut feature helps narrow down the search scope by entering “work” or keywords customized by the IT professional into the search bar in Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft Search should also display personalized search suggestions that should make everyday work more productive.
