New browsers: Mozilla Firefox 93 can AVIF, Firefox 91.2 ESR fixes errors

Mozilla has released Firefox 93 as well as its long-maintained ESR version, which is provided with updates for at least one year and is primarily intended for corporate use. Most of the various innovations were already presented in the last beta.

Standard support for the AVIF image format

After numerous delays recently, support for the AV1 Image File Format (AVIF) of the next generation based on the license-free AV1 video codec (AV1) is now also activated by default in Mozilla’s free browser. The format should serve as a replacement for JPEG in the long term, but it will also serve as a successor for WebP on VP8 basis in question.

In addition to the mandatory optimizations and bug fixes, the official Release Notes also made minor improvements for Firefox PDF and the browser’s resource management.

    • The VoiceOver screen reader now correctly reports checkable items in accessible tree controls as checked or unchecked.
    • The Orca screen reader now works correctly with Firefox, no longer requiring users to switch to another application after starting Firefox.
    • Various security fixes

Mozilla Firefox 78 ESR receives last update

The Mozilla Firefox 78 ESR, which some users still use due to the dependencies of some add-ons, has an update to version 78.15.0 (Release Notes) obtain. This is the last security update for this iteration.

Users who want to or have to continue to use an ESR version should therefore switch to Mozilla Firefox 91 ESR in the future, which will continue to be updated with function and security updates.
