The social network Facebook, the Messenger WhatsApp and the Instagram platform, all services of the Facebook group, are currently offline due to a possible DNS error. While the service operator is already working on a solution, the exact background to the failure is not yet known.
Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram are offline
Facebook shared through its official Twitter account @Facebook only with the fact that the company is aware of the problems and is working on a quick solution. Facebook also apologizes for the inconvenience.
We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

With an almost one-to-one identical statement, the company had already spoken shortly beforehand via WhatsApp’s official Twitter account and promised to keep its users up to date with an update.
We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible.
Thanks for your patience!

According to an initial assessment by Dane Knecht, manager at the Internet security service Cloudflare, the current problem is said to be a DNS error. The Slack communication platform was also recently affected by such an error.
@Facebook DNS and other services are down. It appears their BGP routes have been withdrawn from the internet. @Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 started seeing high failure in last 20 minutes.

According to the on-line platform Down detector, which provides information about server, website and service outages in real time, the problems with Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram began today around 5:30 p.m. Central European time.
Internal tools and platforms are also affected
As Ryan Mac of the New York Times reports, in addition to Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, internal tools and platforms such as Workplace are also affected by the failure.
Not only are Facebook’s services and apps down for the public, its internal tools and communications platforms, including Workplace, are out as well. No one can do any work. Several people I’ve talked to said this is the equivalent of a “snow day” at the company.
