Meeting the need for visual and spatial data for augmented reality (AR) often depends on artificial intelligence to efficiently capture, manipulate, and contextualize data. As a result, the two markets continue to intersect and create significant opportunities. Experts from the analytical company ABI Research expect that by 2026 the number of users of AR applications that use AI in one form or another will exceed 200 million people. Analysts clarify that we are talking about both basic AR technologies, such as machine vision and simultaneous location and matching (SLAM), and additional technologies, including image and object recognition, semantic labeling and analytics.

“The combination of artificial intelligence, machine learning and AR is incredibly powerful,” said Eric Abbruzzese, director of augmented and virtual reality research at ABI Research. “Basically, the possibilities of augmented reality are getting stronger with more data available. They come from location data, sensor readings, environmental dynamics, and integrated systems like the Internet of Things (IoT). AR can also collect these types of data. The introduction of AI in these areas is bringing valuable and often critical augmented reality capabilities to the market. ”
