With the new Pad 5, Xiaomi is stepping into the vacuum left by Huawei in the market for Android tablets with Google services. Includes 11 inch display, four speakers and support for a stylus.
The Xiaomi Pad 5 inevitably has to be compared with the current iPad Air from Apple (test), because at first glance the tablets could hardly look more similar. Xiaomi also relies on a design with a flattened frame, a display that extends far to the edge and a flat back made of aluminum. For the German market, versions in Cosmic Gray and Pearl White are planned, which will be offered from September 23 with 128 GB of storage for 399.90 euros from Xiaomi itself as well as Media Markt and Saturn. Sales are also planned at Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and O2, but the tablet is only offered with WiFi.
WQXGA on 11 inches with 120 Hz
The upscale features mentioned at the beginning primarily refer to the 11-inch display in 16:10 format with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, which Apple only offers from the iPad Pro, which costs at least 879 euros (test). For the screen with a resolution of 2,560 × 1,600 pixels, Xiaomi specifies coverage of the DCI-P3 color space and support for Dolby Vision, but information on brightness is still missing. Similar to “True Tone” at Apple, the “True Display” from Xiaomi automatically adjusts the white point to the ambient light.
Optionally also with a stylus
The Xiaomi Smart Pen is optionally available with 4,096 pressure levels and a 240 Hz touch sampling rate. The stylus weighs 12.2 grams and offers so-called smart pen function keys to quickly take notes or screenshots or to switch between pen and eraser. The pen is held magnetically on the frame and is also charged there.

Quad speakers with Dolby Atmos
Four loudspeakers in the sides are responsible for the acoustic background, each 16 × 20 mm in size to provide a corresponding sound volume. Like Apple, Xiaomi also speaks of certification for Dolby Atmos in tablets.
Snapdragon 860 provides propulsion
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 860, a further development of the 2019 Snapdragon 855 from 7 nm production by TSMC, which works at 2.96 GHz instead of 2.84 GHz on the Prime-Core (Kryo 485), provides propulsion in Pad 5. The Snapdragon 855 Plus already had this feature, but the Snapdragon 860 has made minor adjustments, for example to the ISP, which supports dual video and a night mode for ultra-wide-angle cameras. An 8-megapixel camera with 1080p support is built into the Pad 5 at the front, while a 13-megapixel sensor is responsible for recordings at the back.
The technology supplies Xiaomi with an 8,720 mAh battery, which is suitable for a “long running time“Should take care – details in hours are not yet available. Fast charging is possible with up to 22.5 watts via USB-C, a corresponding power supply is included with the tablet. In terms of software, Xiaomi relies on Android 11.0, including Google services and Google apps, and extends the operating system with its own MIUI 12.5.
