AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro: 5995WX and 5945WX officially documented for the first time

Samsung is launching new memory cards in the popular microSD format. The Pro Plus series with storage capacities of 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB achieves 160 MB / s reading and is thus slightly faster than the Evo Plus with a maximum of 130 MB / s.

Faster than the interface allows

At least in internal tests with its own readers, Samsung found a maximum of 160 MB / s reading and 120 MB / s writing for the microSD cards of the Pro Plus series. You use the UHS-I bus, which allows a maximum of 104 MB / s, but thanks to “proprietary technology“The theoretical limit is exceeded. Other manufacturers such as Lexar also do this. In footnotes, however, Samsung points out that the reading devices must also support this increased performance. There is no binding standard for this.

The Pro Plus are optionally available with a USB adapter that supports 160 MB / s for a surcharge.

MicroSD cards with a UHS-II interface can work even faster, with a peak of almost 300 MB / s, but they are rare and comparatively expensive. PCI Express is expected to find its way into SD cards in the coming year: The first generation of SD Express memory cards is expected to reach almost 900 MB / s.

Performance classes and resistances

All models of the Pro Plus series are specified with the performance classes U3, V30 and A2. U3 and V30 stand for at least 30 MB / s for sequential writing, which is important for 4K video recordings, for example. A2 is the second level of the so-called App Performance Class, which also makes demands on the performance of random reading and writing.

Samsung also advertises with a “6-fold protection” against certain external influences, which includes the following points:

• Waterproof: up to 72 hours in 1 meter deep sea water.
• Temperature resistant: operating temperatures from -25 ° C to 85 ° C, not in operation: from -40 ° C to 85 ° C.
• X-ray safe: up to 100 mGy, corresponds to X-ray scanners at airports.
• Wear-free: up to 10,000 mating cycles.
• Fall-proof: withstands falls from a height of up to 5 meters.
• Magnetically resistant: up to 15,000 Gauss, which corresponds to the magnetic field of a high-field MRI.
