New World: Big fuss about renewed GPU defects

Again, reports of broken graphics cards while playing the Amazon MMO are making the rounds. Again, apparently only a few are affected. Again, it is Nvidia’s flagship RTX 3090, but there are also reports of defective 3080 Ti and 3080. With millions of players, the proportion with problems is tiny.

A tiny percentage of players have problems

Before the mood boils up at this point, the whole thing has to be put in relation: In that new Reddit thread about graphics cards “grilled” by New World no 10 people reported defects in the past two days. On September 28th, New World was officially released and on that day alone recorded more than 700,000 simultaneous players on Steam, which brought the game servers to their knees.

The proportion of those affected should therefore be much lower than in the case of the problems during the beta phase of New World. Nevertheless, media reports are currently causing a stir.

The cause of the new defects, which this time affect various GeForce RTX 3090, GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and GeForce RTX 3080 from the manufacturers EVGA and Gigabyte, remains unclear. Whether the FPS in the game were capped to a certain value or not apparently didn’t matter.

With the problems in the beta, EVGA named poor soldering work in the area of the voltage converters in an early batch of the manufacturer’s RTX 3090 as the cause. According to EVGA, only about two dozen graphics cards were affected.
