The first Surface Duo was not a good star in this country. With the new Surface Duo 2, Microsoft wants to improve everything that starts with updated hardware including 5G support and ends with direct availability in Germany.
Duo still stands for two screens, and the second generation does not change that for the time being. However, the new generation has become narrower and has been supplemented with important functions that characterize a modern premium smartphone, as Microsoft calls the device itself: 5G support, NFC for contactless payment and a dynamic triple-lens camera, with which pictures and videos can be recorded in 4K – the rumors have been fully confirmed on these points.

Speaking of screens: These now have a size of 5.8 inches each and, when unfolded, have a screen diagonal of 8.3 inches, previously there were two times 5.6 for 8.1 inches when unfolded. The brightness is up to 800 cd / m², 90 Hz is also offered. The so-called PixelSense touch displays also support digital input using a pen.

Inside the device, which has become somewhat heavier at 284 grams (the predecessor weighed 250 grams), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 now works instead of the rather old Snapdragon 855 in the first model. The SoC offers 5G support natively, so that the bar is raised a notch here as well. This goes hand in hand with an upgrade of the mass storage device, the selection includes 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB, the RAM has also grown to 8 GB. The higher weight is also due to the significant upgrading of the front of the camera, a wide, telephoto and ultra-wide plus a further front-facing solution are installed – this results in a hump on the back.

According to Microsoft, the Surface Duo 2 offers a battery life that is sufficient for one day of use. In addition to the glacier color, the device will be available in obsidian for the first time. The good news for German customers: The Surface Duo 2 can already be pre-ordered from today and will be available on the German market from October 21, 2021.

The price for private customers starts at 1,599 euros and for corporate customers at 1,649 euros. This means that a similar price structure is being launched in this country as was the case with its predecessor, which just missed the DOA with its much too late start and then at high prices. Microsoft does not commit this mistake in the new generation.
