MediaTek is expanding its range of Kompanio processors, which have been developed for use in ARM-based notebooks and tablets. The new Kompanio 900T is based on the Dimensity 900, which is designed for smartphones. Compared to the largest solution, the Kompanio 1300T, two of the four fast Cortex-A78 cores are missing.

The Kompanio 900T is also an octa-core design from 6 nm production by TSMC, but MediaTek divides the CPU into two Cortex-A78 cores and six Cortex-A55 cores, while the Kompanio 1300T uses four cores each come. As with the Kompanio 1300T, MediaTek keeps a low profile when it comes to clock rates. The Dimensity 900 offers 2.4 GHz on the performance cores and 2.0 GHz on the efficiency cores, but in devices such as notebooks or tablets with better cooling, the clock rates could potentially be slightly higher than in the design for smartphones.

Support for 2K displays with 120 Hz

MediaTek also keeps a low profile on the GPU and only mentions an ARM Mali-G68 without any further details. If you use the Dimensity 900 again for comparison, a Mali-G68 in the MC4 expansion stage with 900 MHz or a slightly higher clock rate should be used. The System-on-a-Chip can control screens with a resolution of up to 2K at a maximum of 120 Hz. For video playback, there is support for the static HDR10 and the dynamic HDR10 +.

Kompanio can also work with dGPU

In the area of storage, MediaTek relies on LPDDR5 for the RAM and UFS 3.1 for the operating system and its own files. The Kompanio 900T will be used in notebooks and there also in Chromebooks and tablets. Large GPUs from Nvidia, for example, can also be connected to the MediaTek processors. Nvidia recently demonstrated ray tracing and DLSS on a combination of Kompanio 1200 with GeForce RTX 3060.

5G and Wi-Fi 6 are integrated

An important part of the Kompanio platform is also its connectivity via the integrated 5G modem for 5G NSA and the upcoming 5G SA as well as older standards such as LTE. MediaTek supports both variants in the sub-6 GHz spectrum and is also prepared for upcoming standards such as Voice over New Radio, i.e. telephoning over 5G. Also on board are Wi-Fi 6 with 2 × 2 MIMO and Bluetooth 5.2.

According to MediaTek, devices with Kompanio 900T should already be “soon” come on the market.
