The new Kingston DataTraveler Max USB stick uses the still rare combination of USB 3.2 Gen 2 and the USB-C connector. With maximum transfer rates of 1,000 MB / s for reading and 900 MB / s for writing, it is currently the fastest USB stick.
1,000 MB / s is a new record
There are now a number of USB sticks that use the USB-C connector, which, unlike USB-A, cannot be inserted the wrong way round into the socket. Most of them use USB 3.2 Gen 1 alias USB 3.0 with 5 Gbit / s and achieve a maximum of around 450 MB / s. With USB 3.2 Gen 2 aka USB 3.1 with 10 Gbit / s, double the speed is possible. The DataTraveler Max should even reach 1,000 MB / s with sequential reading and would be the fastest USB stick currently on the market here. The recently launched Supersonic Rage Prime by Patriot is advertised with a maximum of 600 MB / s. The older one should have a maximum of 700 MB / s Hama FlashPen C-Bolt create.

The DataTraveler Max is offered with storage capacities of 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB. The maximum write rate of 900 MB / s should at least apply to the 1 TB model. The variants equipped with fewer memory chips could be slower, but Kingston, like most manufacturers, does not provide any precise information.
Slim design with sliding mechanism
The DataTraveler Max is very slim with a width of 22 mm and a height of 9 mm, but not exactly short with a length of 82 mm. The weight of 12 grams is nothing special for a USB stick with a plastic housing.

The shells of the case are designed so that the USB-C connector can be pushed out for use. In this case, however, the plug is not completely hidden, as is the case with other designs. In the back of the USB stick there is an LED status display and an eyelet for a key ring.
Kingston mentions compatibility with Windows (from 8.1), macOS (from 10.14), Linux (from 2.6.x) and Chrome OS. The guarantee period is five years.
The official market launch will take place on August 30, 2021. Prices are not yet available.
