Fossil Hybrid Retro: Smartwatch in aviator design with smart functions

After Fossil recently concentrated on fully-fledged smartwatches in the wearable segment, the company is once again showing offshoots with the new hybrid retro series that rely on analog hands paired with smart functions. The term should be up to 12 months.

Classic watches in aviator design

With the Retro Pilot Hybrid Smartwatch, Fossil is taking up the hybrid concept of the former Fossil-Q series (test). The design is based on classic pilot’s watches and offers a Total station with different scales, which are used, for example, to estimate speeds. On the right side of the case there are three buttons that are used, among other things, to operate the stopwatch function and to control the music of the connected smartphone.

The new hybrid offshoots have a case diameter of 44 millimeters. The 22 mm wide bracelets can be exchanged with standard straps. The series is after 5 ATM sealed against water. Bluetooth 4.2 is used for connectivity. Movement data is recorded via an acceleration sensor. The new Fossil offshoots do not offer a heart rate sensor such as the Withings ScanWatch (test), which also uses a hybrid concept. The clock face offers a small activity indicator at six o’clock as well as three icons for notifications, appointments and alarm clock. The activity pointer jumps to the respective icon in the event of any notifications, so that the wearer can immediately see whether it is worth reaching for the smartphone. The idea does not reveal whether an alarm will also be triggered by vibration. A conventional button cell battery of the type CR2430 is used for the power supply. This should be sufficient for up to 12 months, depending on use.

The Fossil Retro Pilot Hybrid Smartwatches are already available. While the models FTW1317 and FTW1318 use a leather bracelet, the FTW1316 offers a link bracelet made of stainless steel. Fossil puts the recommended price at 169 euros for the leather version and 199 euros for the stainless steel version.
